PSUSD offers a continuum of services to meet the needs of students with varying levels of disability in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Title I(B)(612)(a)(5)(A) Least Restrictive Environment provision.

 

In general.--To the maximum extent appropriate, children with disabilities, including children in public or private institutions or other care facilities, are educated with children who are not disabled, and special classes, separate schooling, or other removal of children with disabilities from the regular educational environment occurs only when the nature or severity of the disability of a child is such that education in regular classes with the use of supplementary aids and services cannot be achieved satisfactorily. Educational Programs

General Education

       -  General education class

       -  General education class with supplemental aides and services

       -  General education class with related services

       -  General education class with consultation and/or collaboration with special

           education staff

 

Resource

       -  General education class with Specialized Academic Instruction in class

       -  General education class with Specialized Academic Instruction in a separate class

 

Special Day Class (Pre-K- 12th grade)- Mild/Moderate Disabilities

       -  Separate classroom with Specialized Academic Instruction for majority of the day

       -  Access to modified general education curriculum aligned to common core state

           standards

 

Special Day Class (Pre-K- 12th grade) - Functional Skills (Moderate/Severe Disabilities)

       -  Separate classroom with Specialized Academic Instruction for majority of the day  

           utilizing alternate curriculum standards

       -  Access to an alternate curriculum aligned to common core state standards

 

Adult Transition Program (Ages 18 - 22) 

       -  Vocational training in the community

       -  Access to electives including: Functional Academics, Independent Living Skills,

           Community Based Instruction, Recreation & Leisure

 

State Special School Referral

       -  An IEP team may recommend placement in a State special school if there is no other

          approriate placement within the Riverside County SELPA.

 

Non-Public School

       -  Qualified students may receive educational services in a non-public school setting if neither

           the serving school district or county office can provide an appropriate program.

 

Alternate Education

       -  Alternative education programs include community school, juvenile court schools,

           independent study, home instruction, and hospital setting.

 

Home/Hospital

       -  Special education services provided to eligible students in a home teaching program or

           hospital setting.

       -  Consideration for home/hospital instruction must include in the assessment information a

           medical report from the attending physician or a report from the psychologist stating the

           diagnosed condition and certifying that the severity of the condition prevents the student

           from attending a less restrictive environment.

 

Instruction in a Non-Classroom Setting

       -  A special education program optoin for student ages 18 - 22 with severe disabilities

           continuing their public school education in a non-classroom setting.
